The Goethe Prize

For

AGS Award

Advanced High School Students of German

In keeping with our mission to promote the study of German culture and language, the American Goethe Society has established The Goethe Prize to recognize Washington area public high school students who demonstrate outstanding achievement in German. The competition, held annually, is open to intermediate to advanced students of German in public high schools. The format for the prize will be made available to high school teachers of German each school year. Interested teachers and students find all necessary information on this Web site. The 2010 prize is in the form of 15 cash awards. Teachers who wish to nominate their top students are asked to review the guidelines, complete the nomination form (see below) and submit the requested documentation by April 15, 2010.  The winner's names will be published on the American Goethe Society’s Web site after May 1, 2010. The Goethe Prize is funded by AGS membership dues and contributions from members. Donations are invited from non-members who wish to further the objectives of the Goethe Prize. For more information, please contact AGS at ags.goetheprize@gmail.com.

2010 Results

In 2010 teachers were asked to submit a sample of their nominees' writing.  We provide just one of the excellent samples we received for your reading pleasure.  It was written by Catherine Pearson, a German 5 student of Kerstin Trimble, Arlington Public Schools.  In January 2010, Frau Trimble asked her students to read some German poetry and write a poem.  (Please note that the American Goethe Society did not require a poetic writing sample.)

Das Verwitwete Schiff  (Nach Goethes “Der Fischer”)

von Catherine Pearson

Zwar schritt das Schiff darauf die Welle

so einsam jetzt, gar ohne ihn

jene Winde gerissen sie;
